Whether you're braving a Michigan heatwave or just trying to keep your energy bills down, your HVAC system plays a huge role in your summer comfort. We surveyed our technicians to create a list of their best HVAC tips for summer. Here are 10 simple but powerful tips to help your air conditioner run more efficiently and keep your home feeling just right.

1. Pre-Test Your System Before the Season Starts

Why: You don’t want to discover your AC isn’t working on the first 90-degree day of the year.

How: Test your system in late spring for your AC (and in early fall for your furnace). Run it for 15–20 minutes and listen for unusual noises, check that cool air is coming through the vents, and confirm the thermostat is working correctly. If anything seems off, call in a technician before the busy season starts.

2. Replace Your Air Filter Regularly

Why: A dirty filter blocks airflow, making your system work harder and less efficiently. It can also circulate dust and allergens throughout your home.

How: Replace your air filter every 3-6 months, depending on usage, pets, and allergies. Set a reminder on your phone or calendar so you don’t forget.

3. Don’t Turn Off Your AC When You Leave the House

Why: Turning off your AC completely while you're away might seem like a good way to save energy, but it actually makes your system work harder when you return. The unit has to cool your whole home down from a higher temperature, which can use more energy and put extra strain on your system.

How: Instead of turning it off, raise the thermostat to 78–80°F when you’re gone for an extended period, like on vacation. This reduces energy use without sacrificing efficiency—or your comfort when you get back.

4. Clean and Check Your Air Vents

Why: Dust and debris can build up in your vents and restrict airflow, which makes your AC less efficient and can reduce your indoor air quality.

How: Vacuum your vents regularly and wipe them down with a damp cloth. Make sure nothing is blocking them—like furniture, rugs, or toys. Aim for at least 6-12 inches of open space around each vent for optimal airflow.

5. Close Curtains and Blinds on Sunny Windows

Why: Sunlight pouring through your windows during the day can heat up your home quickly, especially on south- and west-facing sides. That forces your AC to work overtime.

How: Close blinds or curtains during the hottest parts of the day to keep the sun's heat out. For even more impact, use thermal or blackout curtains on those sunniest windows.

6. Schedule a Clean and Check for Your Outdoor Unit

Why: Your outdoor AC unit collects dust, grass clippings, that fluffy cottonwood, and leaves over time. This can affect performance and efficiency.

How: Schedule a clean and check at least once a year (spring is ideal) for your outdoor unit. Our clean and check service includes washing the condenser coil, checking refrigerant levels, and making sure all components are in good shape. We’ll also give you a heads up on anything that may be a concern in the future so you can start planning for any repairs or replacement that may be needed down the road.

7. Keep 1-2 Feet of Clearance Around Your Outdoor Unit

Why: Your AC unit needs proper airflow to release heat. If it’s blocked by shrubs, leaves, or patio furniture, it can overheat and become less efficient.

How: Trim back bushes and clear debris so there’s at least 1-2 feet of open space on all sides of your outdoor unit. This allows for proper ventilation and keeps your system running smoothly. This is one of the most overlooked easy things you can do to keep your system going strong.

8. Watch for Warning Signs

Why: Catching problems early can prevent bigger, more expensive issues down the line.

How: Keep an eye out for:

- Warm air coming from vents

- Reduced cooling performance

- Ice buildup on refrigerant lines

- Water leaks or pooling around your unit

- Frequent cycling on and off

If you notice any of these, call us to come take a look. Don’t let a simple repair turn into an expensive replacement.

9. Use a Dehumidifier in Damp Areas

Why: Humidity makes your home feel hotter and can lead to mold growth, especially in basements.

How: Place a dehumidifier in your basement or other damp areas to reduce moisture in the air. This helps your AC work more efficiently and improves indoor comfort.

10. Install a Smart Thermostat

Why: A smart thermostat helps optimize your home’s cooling schedule, reduces energy waste, and can even lower your monthly utility bills. Plus, you can control it remotely, so you’re not cooling an empty house.

How: Call us to install a smart thermostat that’s compatible with your HVAC system. Many models learn your habits and automatically adjust temperatures based on your routines. Set it to raise the temp when you're away and cool down before you return. Bonus: some utility companies offer rebates for installing energy-saving thermostats.

Taking a few simple steps now can help you avoid costly breakdowns, boost energy efficiency, and stay cool all summer long. When it’s time for expert service or seasonal maintenance, we’re here to help keep your HVAC system in top shape year-round.
